Ways to build a wedding that looks nothing like a wedding — and still runs beautifully.
The legal part of getting married in England and Wales takes about ten minutes in a register office. Everything else is yours to design, which is why the most interesting 2027 bookings look less like a formula and more like a very good party with a ceremony in it.
Formats worth stealing
- Festival weekend: camping or bell tents, two stages, street food traders, wristbands instead of place cards
- The long lunch: ceremony at midday, four hours at the table, finished by early evening
- Micro-wedding plus party: 16 for the ceremony and dinner, 150 the following weekend
- Warehouse or gallery: a blank industrial space with a caterer, a sound system and dramatic lighting
- Woodland or wild garden: a celebrant, rugs, lanterns and a fire pit
Themes with substance
The strongest themes come from something true about the couple rather than a Pinterest board: the pub you met in, the country one of you grew up in, the music you both play. Pick three anchors — colour, food, sound — and let everything else stay simple. That restraint is what separates a designed wedding from a costumed one.
Practicalities of going off-piste
Blank-canvas and outdoor sites carry costs a hotel absorbs: power, water, loos, waste, lighting, security, licensing and noise limits. Build those in from the first budget draft, check whether a temporary events notice is needed for alcohol and late music, and appoint a coordinator who has run a dry-hire site before.
